Lane Construction Co. will soon begin work on a $253 million design/build contract for one section of the $1.6 billion Wekiva Parkway toll road project in Seminole County, Florida, the Orlando Business Journal reports. Lane will be responsible for Section 8, which includes 2.63 miles from Orange Blvd. to east of Rinehart Rd., as well as the toll road’s interchange at Interstate 4 that will connect with State Road 417. Florida Senator Bill Nelson (D) ended his reelection bid, the New York Times reported Sunday, conceding the race to his Republican rival Governor Rick Scott. The Nelson-Scott Senate race was one of several incredibly tight races in Florida which saw an unprecedented statewide manual vote recount. Nelson’s concession comes one day after Democrat Andrew Gillum conceded on Saturday to Ron DeSantis in the governor’s race. Thousands of small cracks have halted Pensacola Bay Bridge construction twice. FDOT says they are safe

Ohio contractor fined for trench death now charged with murder for alleged shooting

Koller A Mason, Ohio, contractor recently fined $201,201 by OSHA following the trench collapse death of Zachary David Hess was arrested in Cape Coral, Florida, on a second-degree murder charge. According to reports by the Fort Meyers News-Press  and Cincinnati.com, Gerald P. Koller, 49, owner of JK Excavating and Utilities, has been charged with shooting and killing 28-year-old Jonathan Joseph Breadmore at a boat dock behind Koller’s Cape Coral home. OSHA cites Karrenbrock Excavating $189K for repeated trench safety violations

Photo by David Dow, TrenchSafety and Supply OSHA has fined Karrenbrock Excavating, Wentzville, Missouri, $189,221 for willful, serious and repeat citations for allowing two employees to work in an unprotected 11-foot-deep trench while installing sewers this January in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri. The firm had been cited two previous times for failing to protect employees in trenches, once in 2013 and again in 2016. For the current incident, Karrenbrock Excavating received three citations (the serious citation had four items): Willful, $99,589, for not protecting employees from cave-ins with an adequate protective system.
